Churros always take me Barcelona. And not just anywhere in Barcelona, the Barrio Gotico.
In the small winding streets of the old city there is a small Churreria painted vivid blue. It serves up warm and crunchy churros all day long. Though I am mostly lost in the city which is built like a maze, I always manage to get myself to the blue shop to buy a cone of sugared sticks.
I will not be going to Barcelona any time soon so I decided to bring a bit of it's taste to my home.
A quick note... you will need a piping bag and star tip in order to make them.
serves 4
1 cup water
2 1/2 tablespoons white sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 cups oil for frying
1/2 cup white sugar, or to taste
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Heat up the water, 2 1/2 tbsp white sugar, salt, 2 tbsp vegetable oil in a pan on the stove. When it comes to a bubble throw in the flour, take it off the heat and stir until it is all incorporated.
Place the ball of dough in a piping bag with a star shaped tip.
Heat up the oil for frying.
Prepare a bowl with the remaining sugar and cinnamon.
When the oil is hot turn it to medium/high and begin piping in the churros by squeezing dough out of the bottom and then snipping it with scissors.
As the churros are cooked toss them into the cinnamon sugar to coat.
